Ways Parents can Motivate Children Into Successful Readers

Our goal at Wells ISD is for all of our students to simultaneously and continuously learn how to read and become successful, independent readers who read to learn throughout their education.

Children are made readers on the laps of their parents.
-- Emilie Buchwald

Parents are the first and most influential teachers. A child's love for reading starts with you. Read aloud to your child everyday and let your child see you reading for various purposes including pleasure! Remember your child will imitate you.

Children who enter school with pre-reading and language skills are more likely to learn to read well.

What can I do to ensure that my child is adequately prepared for school?

It is never too early to begin instruction in reading! DO NOT wait until your child begins their formal education to begin working with them on their reading! You are cheating them out of valuable language experiences.

Reading books with your children at home each day can make a big difference in how easily and how well they learn to read. -- Texas Reading Initiative
