Preschool (Ages 3-4)


Your child is now busy learning about letters and sounds, pictures and print. Playing with language and coming up with a lot of nonsense words and exploring the world of print through scribbling.
At this age your child is very inquisitive asking a lot of questions and talking about everything usually to one who will listen.

Literacy goals

  •     Talking about books.
  •     Identify labels and signs.
  •     Know some letters (recognize letters in her name)
  •     Make some letter sound correspondence.
  •     Understand that print carries a message.
  •     Enjoy listening to books being read aloud.

Tips, Activities and Strategies

  •     I spy games help your child through language, listening for details and following directions.

Example: Find all the "R's" in a magazine and cut them out.

  •     Help her identify words and letters buy labeling her belongings with her name and the name of the object. Learn new words, point to pictures of magazines and say the name.
  •     Read aloud daily. Choose books that your child enjoys and contain stories that she can identify with, such as, her culture and traditions.
  •     Provide your child with opportunities and supplies for creative drawing and printing!

 

What to look for when choosing books for your child

  • Books about simple concepts such as letters, numbers and shapes.
  • Books with repetitive, or rhyming text so your child can join in.
  • Fun and simple plots were action happens quick enough to hold their attention.
  • Books that they can relate to or see themselves in.
