Before Reading:

• Look at the picture on the cover and read the title.
• Make predictions. Discuss what you think the story will be about.
• Do a picture walk. Cover the words on each page and look at the pictures only.
• Ask a lot of questions.
• Who are the characters in the story?
• Where do you think the story will take place?
• What do you think will happen?

During Reading:

• Check understanding by asking questions.
• What is happening now?
• Why do you think the character is acting that way?
• How do you think the character feels?
• Summarize what has happened so far and
• Predict what will happen next.

After Reading:

• RETELL!
• Discuss:
  • What was your favorite part?
  • Who was your favorite character?
  • Draw a picture of your favorite part/character!
  • Write about the story in your book journal.
  • What really happened? Check your predictions.
  • Does this book remind you of another book you read?
  • Has this ever happened to you or someone you know?
